Creating alignment without micromanaging

In a recent post, I shared a story about a company struggling with engagement and alignment. It reminded me a lot of my own leadership journey in government. I learned that when people and roles are out of sync, it silently drains both the team and the mission.
Here are three steps to create alignment without micromanaging:
1. ๐๐ฒ๐ณ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ต๐ผ๐น๐ถ๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ โ each role should have clear outcomes and a sense of purpose and cultural fit.
2. ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฝ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐๐ต๐ ๐๐ผ ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฝ ๐ด๐ผ๐ฎ๐น๐ โ position people where their unique skills support both the team and organizational strategy.
3. ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฟ๐๐ฐ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ โ use interviews and check-ins to explore alignment, purpose, and fit, not just tasks or skills.
I have seen organizations transform when these steps are applied. Engagement grows, retention improves, and people feel seen, understood, and empowered. Leadership works best when it is about clarity, alignment, and connection rather than control.
